Risk Management

VWA Clubs and the Law

Risk Management

Risk Management is an integral part of the effective governance of the Victorian Weightlifting Association.

This manual is an attempt to make club members, coaches and officials aware of their obligations and responsibilities and provide them with the knowledge to competently fulfil their duties.

Risk management is both an individual and club responsibility. Individual members are all responsible for anticipating and managing issues that may impact upon how well strategies are implemented to meet he objectives and goals of the organisation. The law acknowledges that directors are risk takers not trustees. That is the directors of the club are expected to take well-judged sensible risks to develop their organisation. Logical and effective application of risk management principles will ensure that directors, members and officials are consistently forward thinking, rigorous and systematic in the way they carry out their responsibilities with a clear view to the associated risks and opportunities.

There is no mystique about risk management, and at its simplest levels, requires no special knowledge or specific skills. People in sporting organisations deal intuitively with risks every day. Risk may present themselves as issues or challenges that need to be dealt with, or obstacles that prevent you from achieving a daily task, a major project initiative, or the organisations objectives and goals. In a practical they may present themselves as hazards that may cause harm or loss to and individual member or participant. In a legal sense, they present themselves as consequences, or may arise as a consequence, of a negligent act or non-compliance with the law.

This manual has been developed to provide club administrators, members, coaches and officials with an awareness of risk management, their role in the risk analysis process and practical information and tools in developing a “whole of Sport” risk management policy.

An Integrated Approach to Risk Management

Applying risk management means adopting a systematic approach to how we view our environment, identifying issues that face us and developing strategies to address significant risks and taking advantages of opportunities. Not all risks are significant. However their relevance and nature can and do change.

Risk management helps us identify which risks are really important and what we do and how we allocate resources to deal with them.
